What is iAmHealthyFit?
- A community that empowers women of color (Black, Latinas, Afro-Latinas) to live healthy and happy.
- It focuses on healthy meal prep recipes, tips to balance healthy living and healthy exercises.
- It connects WOC with resources from women who not only look like them, understand their issues and are equipped with the right tools to help them live healthy.
How Did We Get Here?
In 2010, I was a recent college graduate overeating my life away due to depression. Looking back at that year of my life, I was in a extremely dark place mentally, spiritually and physically.
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO HONDURAS?
In August of that year, while visiting my family in Honduras, I made the decision to extend my trip from one month to what became a year. It seemed impulsive at the time, but it was during this time that I began my healing process.
With the help of two of my cousins, I learned:
- How to take care of my health both physically and emotionally.
- How to prep my food, how to portion my meals correctly, and how to exercise with proper form.
At the time, I had no idea how valuable these lessons would become in my life. I was simply excited to learn everything I could about changing my life for the better. For the first time in my life, I felt like I was doing things right. And you know what? It felt right!
HAVE YOU WALKED TODAY?
When I began exercising, I took it slow. VERY SLOW. How slow?
- I started walking. I lived very close to a track, which I visited daily after work for 30 minutes. I did not want to overwhelm myself because in the past, doing too much, too soon did not end well.
- Roughly a month after I began walking, my body began asking for more. I felt it was time to take things up a notch and decided to start alternating between walking and jogging each loop. I did not increase my time.
I wanted to really focus on my body and do my best to understand how it changed with my new lifestyle.
Three months into my journey, I began running. One thing remained consistent, I SHOWED UP. For at least 3 – 5 times per week I went to that track and walked/jogged/ran for 30 minutes. If you want to change your life, the first thing you have to do it SHOW UP.
(L) December 2015 and (R) February 2012
When I moved back to the United States, a year later, I did my best to stay committed and consistent. However, things did not go as planned. I relapsed and bad. Moving in with my mother really hindered my process, and tested my ability to be consistent.
Eights months after moving I found myself back the starting line. But this time I was prepared! I remember seeing the photo above and telling myself, “This is the last time you will see yourself like that”. I learned to work around my circumstances and got back on the grind. I put everything I learned to practice and it paid off big!
Quickly, both friends and family wanted my help with their on own transition. I was humbled by their request and motivated to share my journey with anyone who would listen. I wasn’t an expert, but I had been there and done that, TWICE.
WELCOME TO IAMHEALTHYFIT.COM
That’s how iAmHealthyFit.com was born. Actually, it started with four of my friends who wanted to workout with me after work. We would meet at a park in NYC and exercise together. Not only did we support each other, we also pushed each other when we lacked motivation.
They are my inspiration. They encouraged me to write about my journey to show people that you can live healthier and still have a good time.
I’ve created a space where Women of Color can learn that living healthier and happier is attainable, sustainable and fun!
Two years later, iAmHealthyFit.com has evolved, but the commitment to healthy living continues to be the driving force behind the site.
We successfully launched a running club in Portland. We are now joined by a number of content contributors who inspire our readers through their stories. We’ve created free tools to help with your transition. We’ve also partnered with brands to not only review their products, but host giveaways for our readers.
Looking back at the past two years, I am in awe of what we’ve accomplished and I am very excited for what the future holds. I encourage you to explore the site, if you find something helpful, share it with a friend or family member, don’t forget to check us out on social media!
This is a space for you, to my fellow Woman of Color! If there is something you would like to see us cover, drop us a note and we will do our best to make it happen!
